TSMC has recently won over exclusive privileges from Samsung to produce Apple’s A10 chip for the iPhone 7 due to its 10nm process and better benchmark results.  However, the company stated that the recent Taiwan earthquake has affected their production of the chips.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook Kaohsiung, Taiwan recently with a death toll of 116 people and many injured, also causing significant property damage. TSMC didn’t state how much did the tragedy will affect their production. Initially, the company predicted the production capacity to be restored to 95% within two to three days and losing around 1% of this year’s production. However, a report states that the damage caused is worse than forecasted, which might result in a bigger loss.

On a lighter note, TSMC is still expecting to hit the target for Q1 2016 and the manufacturing only took a minor hit from the earthquake. There is no news regarding Apple’s say on this issue thus far and it’s highly unlikely that Samsung will be getting back their manufacturing share of the A10 chip if the impact is as minor as claimed by TSMC. Stay tuned!
