New Sony IMX CMOS sensor announced for smartphones

Sony has been dominating the smartphone market with their impressive Exmor RS image sensors built for smartphone cameras, resulting in many OEM’s using Sony’s image sensors. The Japanese company has just announced the newest in its lineup – the IMX318 CMOS sensor.

This latest component by Sony features hybrid autofocus, with focusing times as quick as 0.03 seconds, which is based on image phase detection autofocus and contrast detection AF. The sensor also boasts 3-axis electronic image stabilization to reduce camera shakiness. The IMX318 also comes with 4K support at 30fps 

The IMX318 will be replacing its predecessor, the IMX230. Featuring a 22.5 MP 1/2.6 sensor, however with a pixel size of 1.0μm. Sony claims that the image quality won’t be affected by the smaller sized pixels. The company stated that it’s engineers have been working on improving the circuit design for noise reduction and enhancing the efficiency of light utilization.

The IMX318 is predicted to be appear in smartphone later during the second half of 2016 since it will be scheduled to start shopping in May this year.
