On Monday, Microsoft announced that they will be bringing cross-network play capabilities to the Xbox One. With that feature coming to Microsoft’s own console soon, the company has since stated that they wish various other gaming networks would join them to make cross-network play a reality. Yesterday, Sony said that they are open to this partnership, although they did not explicitly mention Microsoft nor Xbox Live.

In a statement issued to Gamespot, Sony said that they are open minded about cross-console play. “PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002. We would be happy to have the conversation with any publisher or developer who are interested in cross platform play,” says the statement.

Currently, the PlayStation 4 does have on game that supports cross-platform play: Rocket League. The PS4 version of Rocket League allows PS4 players to play against Steam players. In the future, Rocket League will also be able to support cross-platform play between the PC and the Xbox One.

While nothing concrete has been worked out between Microsoft and Sony just yet, Sony’s statement could potentially mean that Xbox vs PlayStation matches may be a reality sooner than expected.
