Sony seeking to trademark "Let's Play"

“Let’s Plays”, videos that show other people playing video games, are a popular staple on Youtube. It is so popular that Sony is apparently attempting to trademark it.

According to the trademark filing discovered by users on NeoGaf, “Let’s Play” is described as a service focusing on the “electronic transmission and streaming of video games via global and local computer networks.”

Thus far, speculations surrounding this trademark is that Sony wants to use the term for its ad campaigns or perhaps even to re-brand the PlayStation 4’s Twitch streaming capabilities. Of course, there is the possibility that Sony wants to trademark “Let’s Play” as a whole, including the action of recording and publishing gameplay videos done by an individual, although successfully trademarking the act itself would be foolish on Sony’s part as they stand to lose a bunch of good will if it happens.

For now though, the trademark is in “non-final action” status, which usually means that the application was sent back due to errors in the application.
