Many of you would know by now that Netflix is available in Malaysia in all its uncensored glory. Like clockwork, this lack of censorship has ruffled some feathers here in Malaysia, including the government.
Speaking to New Straits Times (NST), Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak, has stated that Netflix’s movies and televisions series will still have to comply with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) content standards. The minister said that MCMC will be asked to meet with Netflix to notify them of local content standards and their obligations.
Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has said that his ministry is currently mulling a new provision under the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 to introduce licensing for over-the-top content application (OTT) providers like Netflix. Currently, services such as Netflix and Facebook are exempted from getting a license as an OTT provider.
Besides the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, local Malay newspaper Berita Harian has reported that the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan has called for the government agencies to proactively filter Netflix’s content.
