As smart watches gets more features, its time for a brand new silicon to enable more advanced features on it and Qualcomm has announced its very first chip designed for smart watches. The new Snapdragon Wear 2100 is made to improved power efficiency, have better smart features and it is 30% smaller than the current Snapdragon 400 chip used in most current smart watches. The Snapdragon 2100 consists of two variants, a ‘Tethered’ model that requires the watch to be paired to a smartphone like most devices, and ‘Connected’ model that will have communication features built in such as WiFi and LTE radio, while enabling users to run applications on it.

Qualcomm sees the use of its Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip not only be used in smart watches, but also other wearables such as glasses, fitness trackers, headsets and etc. As Mobile World Congress is about to happen soon, we should be able to see manufacturers using Qualcomm’s wearable chip and hopefully, these new smart watches could see more smarter features and thinner with the capability of the new chip.
