Sales of the Wii U console isn’t living up to the Nintendo’s expectation, even in its home country of Japan. With sales figures low and the Nintendo NX rumoured to be revealed later this year, Nikkei has reported that Nintendo will be discontinuing production of the Wii U by the end of the year.

Nikkei reports that Nintendo’s decision to discontinue the Wii U is due to the company deciding that sales of the console would not recover. The lack of popular software has always been a thorn in the Wii U’s side and it doesn’t help matters that the console has not been as good of a market performer as its predecessor the Wii. With this decision, it seems that Nintendo will be focused solely on the Nintendo NX as it will be announcing the NX as soon as E3.

However, Japanese tech site IT Media has reported that those rumours are unsubstantiated. According to a Nintendo spokesperson, Nintendo intends to continue production of the Wii U for the foreseeable future. He also added that the rumours of the discontinuation of the Wii U “did not come from our company.” Only time will tell if Nintendo intends to continue manufacturing the console despite its lackluster sales figure.
