Back in 2014, Microsoft added support to the Windows Store that would allow Windows users to purchase stuff from the store via the digital currency known as Bitcoin. Today, that is no longer the case as Microsoft has silently removed Bitcoin support from the Windows 10 Store.
In a Windows Store FAQ, Microsoft has stated that Bitcoins will no longer be accepted when buying content from Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile stores. For those who still have a Bitcoin balance in their Windows Store account, you can still do purchases on the store, but you cannot request a refund for the Bitcoins.
Microsoft did not explicitly state why they’ve decided to cut off support for Bitcoin, but we’re assuming it’s due to the fact that Bitcoin isn’t as widely use as Microsoft expected. Couple that with the fact that Bitcoin’s future is in doubt, and you can see why Microsoft has decided to throw in the towel with regards to Bitcoin.
UPDATE: Apparently, Microsoft has said that they will continue to support Bitcoin in the Windows Store. “We continue to support Bitcoin for adding money to your Microsoft Account which can be used for purchasing content in the Windows and Xbox stores. We apologize for inaccurate information that was inadvertently posted to a Microsoft site, which is currently being corrected,” says a Microsoft spokesman.
