Intel’s agenda at MWC 2016 is one not of devices, but of infrastructure. The renown chipmaker has announced at Barcelona that they will be working with various other companies to roll out their 5G infrastructure.
While 5G will give mobile internet a speed boost, Intel is looking at more than just browsing speeds. The company expects 5G to allow the Internet of Things infrastructure to reach its true potential. Intel is hoping that the number of connected devices would reach the 50 billion mark by 2020.
“Billions of increasingly smart and connected devices, data-rich personalized services, and cloud applications are driving the need for smarter and more powerful networks. The transition to 5G brings communications and computing together and is a fundamental shift for the industry. It is essential to lay the foundation for future 5G networks now to make amazing experiences of the future possible,” says Aicha Evans, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Intel Communications and Devices Group.
To achieve their ambitions, Intel will be partnering up with various companies around the globe. Some of the companies that will be assisting Intel in developing networking technologies include Huawei, Nokia and Verizon. Telco companies such as AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo, Telefónica, Vodafone, ZTE, Ericsson, Korea Telecom and SK Telecom will be responsible for pushing out 5G networks in their respective countries.
Besides infrastructure, Intel will also be delivering wireless communication solutions for a wide rage of smartphones, phablets, PCs and IoT devices.
