In June last year, MediaTek has announced the Helio P10, a true octa-core CPU which has all cores running at full speed. According to the company, the Helio P10 will be powering over a hundred smartphones this year. Its successor, the Helio P20 has just made its debut at MWC earlier today.

The Helio P20, like its predecessor, is made to be under the hood of mid-range smartphones. However this new SoC possesses a crazy spec sheet, suggesting that it took a lot of future proofing into consideration. The Helio P20 consists of eight Cortex A53’s clocked up to 2.3GHz. It is built on a 16nm process and MediaTek claims that it offers 25 percent more battery efficiency than the P10.

The P20 has three memory bays – 2 x LPDDR4X at 1600MHz and a LPDDR3 at 933Mhz. Running alongside the the CPU is a the Mali T-880 GPU at 900MHz. However, a somewhat letdown is the P20’s display support, which is only up to 1080p for two displays. On the camera side of things, it supports up to 24MP or a dual 13MP setup and 4K video shooting at 30fps. With the MediaTek Imagiq’s phase-dection autofocus and denoising engine, the capturing low light images and moving objects is said to be uncompromised. Apart from that, the SoC’s LTE modem will offer Cat.6 speeds.

To wrap it all up, the Helio P20 has a 20 percent higher performance than the P10, has a GPU that performs 25 percent better and as mentioned earlier, 25 percent more battery efficiency. What do you think about this new SoC that will be featured inside future mid range smartphones?
