Does the GALAXY Note 4 excite the Malaysian market?

DISCLAIMER: This is an opinion written article and I absolutely LOVE the Samsung GALAXY Note 4.

Today is Deepavali in Malaysia, where the Indians here celebrate their new year, it should be a really happy day for everyone, theGALAXY Note 4 also got debuted in time here for getting some great festival sales. The picture above is taken from a Samsungretail store in a popular mall earlier today, do you see a lot of customers in there?

Nope, you don’t.

Ever since Chinese smartphones stormed into the market, almost every Samsung retail outlets in the city seems to be really quiet, you’ll find too many sales assistants hanging about in the outlet, you see their hungry faces looking at you in hope of getting you as a customer or they themselves are already feeling hopeless about selling the company’s products.

Friends around me have been asking me this, what’s so great about the GALAXY Note 4, all I could tell them is a beautiful display and premium build quality, when I talked about the awesome S-Pen features, most of them seem to be lost, those that are currently using the previous GALAXY Note 3 don’t even know that they could do a Scrapbook or Action Memo on a powerful device.

Samsung’s latest GALAXY Note 4 is a great smartphone, it has awesome 64-bit CPU performance, a beautiful Quad HD display and the best looking design that Samsung has ever crafted for its smartphone after so long, it really should have done well, we actually expect stock availability to be scarce, and most importantly the hype of the product lives on, but are you really feeling the heat of the new GALAXY Note 4? Does it excite you till you really have to get hold of it?

You see, the GALAXY Note 4 is really expensive at RM2,499 and it merely introduces a marginal update in software features from its predecessor. While the GALAXY Note 3 has seen a price reduction of RM2,099, is it worth paying an additional RM400 for an upgraded display and more S-Pen features? Coming from a technical standpoint, it’s definitely worth paying that extra amount, but most consumers here aren’t really getting the point.

“Really, what should I note? I want to know new features!”

Price isn’t the only factor that could have affected consumer’s decision in buying the GALAXY Note 4, Samsung hasn’t fully marketed the great features of the GALAXY Note 4 this time to Malaysian consumers, the GALAXY Note 4 also no longer feels iconic like the GALAXY Note 3 when you know the company is merely playing catch up with metal phone makers like HTC and Apple.

In my humble opinion, if Samsung really wants to do even better with the GALAXY Note 4, not only do they need to deliver the correct marketing message to consumers, the company should actually stop selling the GALAXY Note 3. Malaysians want fresh new products, and when they see a current product that can perform as well as the new one, why would they want to pay more to buy something they don’t really need?
