It’s officially and finally announced that Microsoft’s HoloLens dev kits will start shipping today to Windows developers and Windows’ enterprise partners. HoloLens, dubbed “the first and only, untethered holographic computer”, was announced January last year and since then, Microsoft have been teasing and updating us with the latest developments regarding the device, along with a demo of the HoloLens’ simulation at Build 2015 and a Microsoft event, showing off shooting lasers and destroying aliens.
The Galaxy Explorer, the most voted app to be developed for Microsoft’s HoloLens, was a community developer project by Microsoft called “Share Your Idea”, whereby the community contributed over five thousand ideas for the apps that can be build for the holographic computer. Built in a mere six weeks, the Galaxy Explorer app is now available in the Windows Store, and the source code for the app will be available online at GitHub, which can then be applied to your own projects if you happen to be an aspiring developer.
It is said that HoloLens will impact the technology of augmented reality in the near future with companies and organizations adopting it. For instance, BlueScope Buildings’ plan to rethink the whole construction planning and Japan Airlines envisioning the use of holographic computing in their training of pilots and aircraft operation.
