Cat is a company known for their heavy industrial machinery. Not only that, since 2012, Cat has been manufacturing smartphones, showing the world their own take on an ideal handset. Unsurprisingly, they are heavy duty and rugged smartphone designed to be durable.

This time, Cat has announced a new rugged smartphone, the S60, which will be sporting a thermal camera, the smartphone in the world of this kind. The S60 also has a waterproof rating of 5 metres of depth for up to an hour.

The integrated thermal camera of the S60 is made by a company called Flir, who has been manufacturing external thermal cameras for iOS and Android devices. Hence, the S60 is the first smartphone to have a thermal camera integrated. The thermal camera is capable of capturing images and videos, display live thermal images and measure temperatures of surfaces. The resolution however, stands at a VGA resolution of 640×480. This shows that the thermal camera is clearly meant for practical use, with an extra 13MP camera for photo taking and video recording.

The rest of the specs of the S60 aren’t slouchy either. First of all, it has LTE support. It runs on a Snapdragon 617 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. All these, powered by a 3,850 mAh battery.

On the front lies a 5MP camera and a 4.7 inch 720p display, which is a bit of a letdown. The screen features a super bright display as claimed by Cat and is protected by Gorilla Glass 4 which is bumped up to a thickness of 1mm instead of the usual 0.4mm. Other than that, S60’s screen supports touch from wet fingers and gloved fingers. The S60’s Strengthened Die Cast Frame consists of an aluminium build. Cat claims that the device is drop proof for up to 1.8 metres.

In all its ruggedness, do the rest of the features suffice? Let us know at the comments section below!
