Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge are changing the way we log in to websites. This new method comes with an Authentication API that removes the need for a password when logging in. W3C and FIDO Alliance has unveiled a new way to allow websites to replace passwords by using biometric encryption methods.
The specification is called WebAuthn, where web developers will be able to integrate fingerprint readers and face scanners into their website. Users that want to sign-in to a website will get an authentication code on their phones, to which they will have to enter them into the website, effectively reducing the percentage of password reuse. The update will come to the mentioned browsers in the coming months and is going through a final approval. This new authentication could massively reduce the risks of using passwords that comes from problems like phishing, man-in-the-middle attacks and abuse of stolen credentials, based on a statement from FIDO Alliance.
Using your fingerprint or face to get access to your information is not new, in fact, we use it every day with our phones and so far it seems to be a rather effective method of securing and accessing our information.
