Wong Heang Tuck (Second from the Right), Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile and Jasmine Lee (Second from the Left), Chief Marketing Officer of U Mobile: Unveiling U Mobile’s first iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus offerings.

U Mobile has unveiled their new financing plan for postpaid and prepaid consumers so that everyone can easily own a smartphone, starting with the Apple iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. This is known as the U MicroCredit scheme. It is the lowest rate available for the iPhone 6 and is the first every device financing program offered by a telco, with offerings at a very attractive rate. Not only would this be the fastest, the easiest and the cheapest way to get an iPhone 6 into your hands, this will also be the the first time you will get true contract freedom for postpaid customers. Not to say you can break it without a penalty, but the penalty will be much more affordable in case the U Mobile plans is not what you expected. Well, let’s get down to the details. Wait, before that — did I mention that this plan is available for prepaid customers as well?

The iPhone 6 with U MicroCredit!

The iPhone 6 is a premium device that is considered as a luxury device and although it is offered at a subsidized rate, the contracts still start at about the RM2000 mark for upfront payment for the device during registration. This is where U MicroCredit comes in, in partnership with Berjaya Credit, they allow users to take home the iPhone 6 with no hefty upfront payment. The RM98/mth payments will start from the moment the phone is in your hands, that will be your first installment. With U Mobile, you

You literally get to take home the iPhone 6 for only RM98 as the first installment and the approval time is really fast. The MicroCredit is akin to a micro loan, allowing you to have flexible repayments of up to 33 months with interest rates starting from 0.84% to 1.5% per month. It does not require a credit card, collateral or upfront payment upon registration. For everyone, it is simple: All you have to do is walk into any U Mobile store, sign up for the device programme and pick an iPlan. Note that Postpaid customers do not need to pay any upfront payment when they purchase the iPhone via credit card and subscribe to auto debit for monthly fee. The prices for the iPhone 6 that Apple is currently offering is the old price before the revised RRP. New device for an old price, U Mobile will continue its sales of these devices as this price until 31st March 2015 while stocks last.

Did I mention Prepaid Plans?

U Mobile has boldly launched the first ever iPhone 6 prepaid plans in Malaysia. U Mobile is offering prepaid customers with the same iPlans to own an iPhone 6 starting from RM98. They enjoy the same benefits that postpaid customers do and they also enjoy the same saving up to 40% compared to people buying an unlocked iPhone 6 on retail and then signing up for an existing data plan. Prepaid users do have to pay an upfront payment which will rebated over the next 24 months, which is basically the only difference from postpaid users.

Postpaid Freedom and Extras

Usually smartphones bundled with a postpaid plan come with a contract of 12 to 24 months but U Mobile offers true contract freedom, if you’re not happy with U Mobile, you can leave. If you’re happy, then stay! That’s the culture the U Mobile is offering to users today. You do not have to pay a high penalty if you decide to terminate early, instead all you have to do is pay subsidized price for the iPhone 6 which sill be prorated accordingly. This means, if you don’t like the service that U Mobile is giving, but love your iPhone 6, you can just pay for the iPhone 6 in full and keep it.

U Mobile Postpaid iPlans come with internet, calls, SMS– the normal gist — and extra added features, such as multiple SIMs (and numbers) for one plan.

Truly Unlimited Data

I’ve been waiting for this day for a long long long time. Finally, beginning 19th March 2015, those who sign up before 30th June 2015 with the i60/i90 plans will enjoy unlimited internet till 31st July 2015. TRULY Unlimited, which means you will get full speed data all-day-every-day and there will be no cap to which your high-speed data will slow down. You can stream YouTube in your car while on a road trip around Malaysia or even use your smartphone to tether it’s data to your laptop; Granted it won’t be as fast as broadband, but it is something. The i130 customers will have eligible access to unlimited data till the 30th of September 2015.

U Mobile has really done all of us well, as more and more users are using Skype instead of actual phone calls, their decision to weaken their GSM offerings (8 cents per SMS!?) to boost up their Data-centre offerings (RM40 a month for 1.5GB, that’s more like it) is a big step forward. I would like to see telcos implement in-lift systems though. It would be nice if my Skype calls didn’t cut off when I enter a basement or step into a lift. It’s not a necessity but it would be a nice luxury.

Get one now!

U Mobile’s plans for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices are set available starting 19th March 2015. If you are planning to get an iPhone 6 or just upgrading from an old device, now would be the time. Especially before the stock for the New-Device-Old-Price scheme is over. Would I be changing over to U Mobile? Maybe when my 24-month contract is over, the penalty with Maxis is crazy.
