Technopinion: Huawei P10’s flash storage fiasco teaches the industry one important lesson

Just a few hours ago, reports of Huawei’s flagship P10 smartphones using different storage chips have aroused attention worldwide, causing outrage among fans and customers, and while Huawei has officially issued a statement that the phone does indeed use different storage chips from different manufacturers, and at the same time claiming that the different storage chip made little difference to the experience and smartphone performance shouldn’t be judged by benchmarks, users aren’t happy with the answer of course, its like buying an Audi with the internals of a Toyota, and you just have to convince yourself to think that you own an Audi.

By all means, a flaw in hardware isn’t something new, for instance Apple has the iPhone 4’s “antennagate”, battery life performance between the TSMC and Samsung made Apple SoC. Huawei’s blunder this time teaches the smartphone industry one important lesson – be very careful with showing benchmark scores. In fact, Huawei did cause another blunder back then, claiming that 4GB RAM phones to perform better than 6GB RAM phones, with the irony of its P10 Plus to feature the latter amount of RAM. During Huawei’s P10 press conference, I threw the question at one of Huawei’s executives and the reply I got was, “We tested our 4GB RAM equipped phones with some competitor models that came with 6GB of RAM, and found ours to perform better, and this is the real intention of that statement.”

The thing is, if Huawei is so confident that the phone offers a great and speedy user experience, there’s no need to show benchmark scores against competitors, because frankly speaking most smartphones are already fast enough with optimized software, and Huawei has already done well with EMUI. Otherwise, Huawei executives should really be careful with their words and social media postings.
