It seems that Samsung’s chip manufacturing plant will be manufacturing chips from a different company as the Korean tech powerhouse has announced that they will be manufacturing chips for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) starting from 2016.

Before the deal between AMD and Samsung, AMD chips are mainly manufactured by the Abu Dhabi-owned GlobalFoundries. Starting from next year though, both Samsung and GlobalFoundries will manufacture AMD’s “Greenand” GPUs and “Zen” CPUs using a 14nm process, making the chips faster and more enery-efficient compared to previous AMD chips.

This partnership comes at a time where both companies are struggling to keep up in the marketspace. AMD lags behind Intel and Nvidia in CPU and GPU sales and has seen a layoff as well as two hardware experts leaving the company. Samsung continues to struggle as their smartphone division is no longer the juggernaut it once used to be.

Whether or not this partnership will be bemeficial to both companies remains to be seen, but if all goes well, it could be just what both companies need to remain relevant in the market.
