There are a lot of different rumors on the upcoming Samsung flagship phone, with one of it being that Samsung will be taking a step back from the megapixel race and equip the Galaxy S7 with a 12MP primary camera.  The flipside is that the sensor will be rather large by phone standards; 1/2-inch in size if the rumor turns out to be true, that is.

Previously rumored to come with a 20MP ISOCELL sensor, next year’s flagship has also been mentioned in the same sentence with Sony’s custom 23-24.9MP used in the Xperia Z5 generation. If this new bit of info checks out, we expect the S7 will perform better in low-light because of dubbed dual-PD (dual-photodiode) technology, and obviously larger individual photosites.

In the other hand, the Nexus 5X and 6P both equipped with Sony’s IMX377 sensor, which is 1/2.3-inch diagonal and has 1.55-micron pixels, is the largest on a contemporary flagship phones. Samsung upcoming top-tier device will improve with the difference between 1/2.3-inch, however 1/20-inch isn’t as great as to be called a jump. Comparing a single-digit percentages with the sensor diagonal of 7.75mm vs 8.00mm.

According to the source, the new sensor is set to enter mass production any day now to be able to make it to the Galaxy S7, rumored to be released as early as January 2016. You can tell by now that none of this is confirmed at the moment, so make sure to contain your excitement.
