OPPO announces R9 and R9 Plus, but Lollipop

It seems that Oppo is focusing more on consumers of the midrange smartphone market rather than bringing the competition to other flagships, which isn’t entirely a bad thing. The OEM recently launched the OPPO F1, dubbed “The Selfie Expert”, sporting an 8MP selfie camera with an impressive f/2.0 aperture.

Oppo has since unveiled two new mid rangers, the OPPO R9 and R9 Plus, both of which sport near high end specs apart from their processors. The OPPO R9 features an 5.5 inch AMOLED display at 1080p. Under the hood lies a MediaTek Helio P10 SoC, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It sports a 13MP rear facing camera and a whopping 16MP “Pegasus” front facing camera which happens to be Samsung’s ISOCELL image sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The R9 is packing a 2,850mAh battery with SuperVOOC fast charging.

Unsurprisingly, the R9 Plus has a larger screen at 6 inches, powered by a more mainstream Snapdragon 652 processor alongside 4GB of RAM and two internal storage options – 64GB and 128GB. The R9 Plus boasts a larger battery of 4,120mAh, also with SuperVOOC support. It features the same selfie camera as the R9, however sporting a 16MP Sony IMX298 sensor on the rear.

Both the R9 and R9 Plus feature aluminium builds with slim bezels, measuring at 1.66mm on the former and 1.76mm on the latter. Both also have fingerprint sensors embedded in the home button on the front, instead of the rear fingerprint sensors which are becoming a commonality in today’s smartphones. A drawback however is both handsets run on a Color OS skinned Android 5.1 Lollipop with the fact that Android N is coming out soon. Is that a dealbreaker for you? Let us know your thoughts.
