Nearly a month ago, the folks at Canonical have worked with Meizu to unveil the most powerful Ubuntu-operated smartphone, known as the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition. Chinese OEM OnePlus has joined the software adoption game as well, however, not releasing a dedicated and exclusive handset like Meizu. Instead, OnePlus collaborated with Canonical to roll out a tailored build of the Ubuntu OS to their first ever smartphone – the OnePlus One.

OnePlus has brought the announcement to its forums, stating that it’s joining the Ubuntu family. OnePlus did not specify the stability of the OS on the One, but has warned it was still a work in progress. Enthusiasts shouldn’t get carried away just yet, as features such as the camera, bluetooth and GPS are still not working. Nevertheless, UB Ports show an 80% progress in terms of the development of Ubuntu for the OnePlus One.

OnePlus has also announced that they are working on a release for the OnePlus X, and are in the midst of recruiting developers:

Calling all developers! The community has encountered a number of difficulties in the development process. Anyone interested in helping out with the OnePlus X build is welcome on Ubuntu’s developer page.”

The Ubuntu OS for other devices are also under development, notably the Nexus 5 and Nexus 10, both of which are at 90% progress, based on the UB Ports site. Which side are you on? CyanogenMod, Oxygen OS or Ubuntu? Let us know your thoughts!
