New biometric technology fools Touch ID using Play-Doh

Fingerprint sensors are getting more common nowadays, with Apple being one of mainstream pioneers for the smartphone embedded technology. Fingerprint technology has proved to make our devices more secure, but security company Vkansee has spoofed Apple’s Touch ID, with Play Doh.

In the video by TechRadar, Vkansee takes an imprint of a thumb using dental clay. As soon as the dental clay dried up, Play Doh was being used to get the thumbprint. The famous play toy plasticine for kids was then used to unlock the iPhone, as simple as that.

The demonstration wasn’t meant to offend or fool Apple in any way, instead, Vkansee CEO Jason Chaikin wanted to prove that today’s fingerprint sensor’s embedded in smartphones don’t have resolution’s high enough to capture a fingerprints details in order to make a phone secure.

According to him, Vkansee’s fingerprint sensor can capture images at 2000 dpi, compared to the iPhone’s lowly 500dpi. The company’s chip even captures details such as sweatpores, further securing your device.

Looks like we might be seeing Vkansee’s chip in upcoming devices next year, but the company has yet to confirm any OEM’s who have adopted their technology, which is currently in its pre-proudction stage.
