Lenovo set to take over IBM x86 business

A couple of years back, Lenovo successfully acquired IBM’s PC business and the company’s success has been overwhelming as it has become the No.1 PC maker in Malaysia and globally since then. Today, Lenovo Malaysia has announced an even bigger and exciting milestone for the company as the company is now set to take over IBM’s x86 businesses.

Lenovo will acquire the entire current IBM x86 product line up which includes the System x, BladeCenter and Flex System blade servers and switches, x86-based Flex integrated systems, NeXtScale and IDataPlex servers and associated software, blade networking and maintenance operaitons. With the close of this acquisition, Lenovo will become the No.3 enterprise hardware vendor in the country and the company hopes to make it to No.1 similar to the PC market.

Ties between IBM and Lenovo continue to strengthen in this acquisition, both companies have established a strategic alliance where Lenovo will serve as an OEM to IBM and resell selected products from IBM’s industry leading storage and software portfolio, including the company’s Storwize sorage product family, Linear Tape Open (LTO) products, IBM Flash storage arrays and elements of IBM’s system software portfolio, including Smart Cloud, General Parallel File System and Platform Computing solutions.

The acquisition has began on the 1st of October and is expected to close fully in early 2015, Lenovo Malaysia will assume current IBM product maintenance for an extended five years, which current IBM x86 customers will still continue to enjoy a seamless product experience.
