ISIS reach on Twitter has stalled

It seems that Twitter is no longer a great place for ISIS to recruit fresh jihadis as Twitter has stepped up efforts to crackdown on the group’s proselytizers.

According to a study from George Washington University’s Program on Extremism, suspensions of English-speaking users affiliated with ISIS from June to October 2015 have limited the group’s growth and devastated the viral reach of specific users. An estimated total of 125,000 accounts have been suspended during that time period.

The study further shows that there are less than a thousand Englsh-language accounts that are sympathetic to ISIS”s cause and these accounts generally only interact with one another rather than actively seek out new recruits. Each account averaged 350 followers and has an average of five tweets per day when compared to the average of 14 tweets before the crackdown.

When compared to other social media sites, J.M. Berger – co-author of the report – says that Twitter is still less active than many of its rivals due to the relative youth of the service.
