If you’re a Linux user, chances are good that you’ve heard of Debian before. Well, according to the Docker Blog, it seems that its founder, Ian Murdock, has passed away at age 42.

Circumstances surrounding Murdock’s death is highly suspicious as the developer underwent a breakdown of sorts within the past few days. On his now deleted Twitter account, Murdock has stated that he intends to commit suicide. Earlier this week, Murdock apparently had a confrontation with the police with records indicating that the man was arrested on December 27th. Whatever the case, no cause of death has been given yet.

The Debian Project, Murdock’s claim to fame, was created while he was still a student at Purdue University. It was one of the first Linux distros to be created and is widely considered to be on of the most successful open-source projects ever launched.

Some of the Murdock’s other achievements besides Debian include holding the CTO post of the Linux Foundation, being a senior leader at Sun Microsystems, and being Vice President of Platforms at ExactTarget, which has since become a part of Salesforce in 2012.
