Pirates apologize over "The Hateful Eight" leak

Quentin Tarantino has a new movie out called “The Hateful Eight”. Pirates somehow got their hands on a high quality non-camrip version of the film and has since uploaded it onto various torrent sites. So far so typical, but there is a twist to this story. Apparently, the pirates responsible for the leaks are now apologising for it.

If this reddit post is to be believed, it seems that the group responsible for the leak, Hive-CM8, are “officially” apologising for their actions. According to the post, they were motivated to share the movie with people who are “not rich enough” to see the film in theaters and have, in the spirit of being “sporting”, held the release back for a week to give the official release a fighting chance.

The group went on to clarify that they acquired the leak “from a guy on the street” and not through a hack, meaning that Hive-CM8 was only responsible for distributing the film onto torrent sites and not intentionally hacking into some Hollywood Executive’s archives and copying the movie remotely.

Included in the posts is the standard “defense of piracy” arguments where the group states that piracy can help the business instead of hinder it. Regardless of whether or not the apology was sincere, we suspect that Tarantino and the movie studio responsible for the production of The Hateful Eight wouldn’t accept this apology.
