Google plans to build standalone VR headset

Thus far, Google’s sole entry into the Virtual Reality market is the Cardboard. This may no longer be the case as it seems that the tech giant is now working on a proper VR headset of its own.

If Wall Street Journal is to be believed, Google is aiming to create a VR headset that does not require a phone or a PC to work. Keep in mind that all VR headsets that have been revealed so far require either devices to work. Should this be true, it would make Google’s VR headset the first all-in-one VR headset. According to the report, Google is working with Movidius on motion-tracking cameras for the headset. Both companies have collaborated before on Project Tango, a smartphone that features 3D depth-sensing tech.

This would also mean that Google is currently working on two seperate VR headsets as there were reports last week that Google is working on a VR headset that is powered by a smartphone, similar to Samsung’s own Gear VR headset.

Don’t get too excited about this report though, as sources say that the device is currently in its early developmental stages and may even be scraped entirely. While it is highly unlikely that this particular headset will be revealed at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference, sources have said that Google’s own smartphone-powered VR headset will be revealed at the conference.
