If your computer is currently being powered by a Skylake, you might want to know that the processor has a known bug that causes the PC to freeze under complex workload conditions.
This bug was first discovered by hardwareluxx when they were running Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search’s (GIMPS) Prime95 application to find Mersenne primes. Users at hardwareluxx has since submitted this report to GIMPS who has confirmed the existence of said bug, which was then forwarded to Intel.
Intel has since issued a statement that this particular bug does exist and has developed a fix which will be distributed to its hardware partners via a BIOS update.
While no reason is given as to why the bug occurs, testers confirmed that said bug affects both Linux and Windows-based system. Prime95 has historically been used to benchmark and stress-test computers using Fast Fourier Transforms to multiply extremely large numbers. The bug in question occuers when a particular exponent size, 14,942,209, pops up.
