During Apple’s ‘In The Loop’ event, Apple also took the time to announce a new open source platform that would allow those interested to develop their own health care app: CareKit.

Similar to Apple’s ResearchKit software platform for scientist, CareKit is Apple’s way of getting more involved in the health care and medical research after the addition of the Health app. Some of the new apps that have been developed through CareKit thus far includes an app that would assist patients with Parkinson’s disease track the effectiveness of the drugs or the exercise regiments they’re on.

Medical institutions like the Texas Medical Center has also created a post-operation check list out of CareKit which tracks the patient’s symptoms and uses an accelerometer to measure their range of motion. Another example would be the app that Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center created to store data from home monitoring devices of patients with chronic health conditions.

Apple is expected to launch the CareKit suite in April.
