A guide to choosing a smartwatch

artwatches are slowly but surely becoming a gadget that everyone needs. So what is important when you are choosing a smartwatch on whether you should get one or which one you should buy?

#1: Functions

The main reason you would get a smartwatch is if you need one. Smartwatches offer a variety of functions to the user, ranging from notifications to making calls. For the not-so-busy, like me, I would say that I do not need a smartwatch as I can whip out my phone anytime.

Samsung Gear S, for example, comes equipped with a SIM card slot which enables you to actually call someone or send a text message from the watch itself. However, if you do not need those functions, you should definitely look out for something more basic or cheaper, like the Asus Zenwatch which is, still great.

#2: Compatibility

When deciding on which smartwatch to buy, this is definitely a vital point to note. Understand what smartphone you are using and which smartwatch would be compatible with its operating system. Typically, Android watches go with Android phones and Apple watches with iOS, although now you can use Android Wear on iOS as well with limited functions available at the moment. However, there are, of course, watches like the Pebble Time that can be paired with both Android and iOS. Note that this would make it useful if you have both Android and iOS devices. Smartwatch - Pebble

#3: Design

I consider the smartwatch an accessory and so design does play a big role when it comes to deciding which smartwatch to purchase. It is undeniable that most if not all smartwatches do look great but there are of course, some that triumph the rest. There are also watches that allow you to customize them as you please, by changing the straps, mainly.

When it comes to design, I am a huge fan of the Moto 360 Gen 2. I am really happy with Moto Maker, the site that allows you to customize most of the watch. It can look elegant or sporty, according to your taste. Design-wise, this has to be the most versatile one.

#4: Price

Ahh, of course, that one thing that would make you think twice before purchasing. I personally find most smartwatches to be reasonably priced, ranging around RM700 to RM1000. However, there are those that are way out of budget and not so worth it unless you are a big fan of the company (eg. Apple).

#5: Performance

This is the last point in this post as I personally think that due to how new smartwatches are to the tech world, there is still a lot of performance improvements that can be done. Apple has just released the Watch OS2 that I would expect to be quite the stunner.

There can be a lot of other points to consider when buying a smartwatch. If you think you have other points to add to the list, leave a comment below and tell me what else is important when considering the purchase of a smartwatch.
