Do you sell stuff online? Well, starting from next year, you’re going to have to register with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) before you do so.

According to Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, the ministry is currently drafting regulations involving all sales of items, including one-offs. This means that if you want to resell your 2nd hand goods online, you’re going to need to register with SSM before doing so. “Even if it is only for selling one product such as a telephone online, it must be registered with SSM and the item needed to be sold within 30 days. If the item is not sold within 30 days, the seller will have to apply again for another 30 days period,” says Hamzah.

When asked for the justification of this requirement, Hamzah stated that the move was aimed at ensuring consumer rights were guaranteed and avoiding fraud for online transactions.

Of course, how exactly the SSM would enforce this particular regulation is anyone’s guess at this point, especially when it comes to international online marketplaces or even on websites such as Craigslist.
