Sony’s lenses and image sensors have been dominating the smartphone market, being featured in countless smartphones including a few flagship devices. Recently, the Japanese company has confirmed that its own dual-lens camera will be featured in smartphones next year.

Sony did not name any OEM in particular, but there are rumors of the iPhone 7 Plus adopting this dual-lens camera feature. According to Kenichiro Yoshida of Sony, the growth of the smartphone market is slowing down so that may affect the demand or production schedule of dual-camera smartphones by major smartphone manufacturers. This might mean a premature feature of the dual-lens camera. However, Yoshida highlighted further that the real start of smartphones with dual-lens camera will be in 2017.

One of the advantages of dual-lens camera is greater zoom without digital zoom by making use of two lenses of different focal lengths. Another advantage is better low-light capabilites, with two lenses bringing in more light. We do not know whether Sony will be including this feature in their next line of Xperia smartphones, but it will be highly likely, since the company had already wowed the globe with the 4K screen Xperia Z5 Premium last year.
