Previously, Skype has released separate apps for Windows 10 – one for messaging and the other for video calls. According to Skype’s official blog post, they have been listening to user experiences and feedbacks, hence they will be bringing a universal Skype app for Window 10.

Skype has learnt that people value more lightweight single-mode apps. However, one of the feedbacks they’ve received are regarding different forms of PC’s and tablets:

But what we also learned from this feedback is that as the screen size gets bigger—large tablets, 2 in 1s and PCs for example—and you begin to use the apps, expectations shift and people want to limit app clutter.”

The blog post continued with the statement that consumers want apps that can do anything they want within the comfort of a single window. Hence, the company will be introducing Skype Universal for Windows 10, which allows users to text and video call in the same app. Skype has also promised new features that will arrive with upcoming releases of the app:

  • Start a chat with anyone using Skype or not using Skype
  • Create a group and send group messages
  • Group voice and video calling
  • Share your screen, files and video messages
  • Manage notifications from individual chats

The app will be released first on Windows 10 PC’s before moving on to Windows 10 powered mobile devices. The Skype Universal Windows Platform Preview app is now available for Windows Insiders and anyone can sign up to be an Insider to get a taste of the preview app.
