Smartphones don’t exactly have huge storage space to begin with. However, Samsung is aiming to change that as they have announced that they will be mass producing the industry’s first 256GB embedded memory chip.

Based on the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard, Samsung states that these chips are capable of exceeding the performance of a typical SATA-based SSD for PCs. This chip will be capable of handling up to 45,000 and 40,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random reading and writing respectively. For sequential reading, Samsung is saying that this memory chip will take advantage of two lanes of data transfer to move data at up to 850MB/s. It will also support up to 260MB/s for sequential writing.

The performance of this chip, Samsung says, will allow it to support seamless Ultra HD video playback and multitasking functionality on large-screen mobile devices, such as watching 4K Ultra HD movies on a split screen while searching image files or downloading video clips. The 256GB capacity that comes with the chip will also allow it to store up to 47 Full HD movies.

With this announcement, you can expect to see high-end smartphones with a huge storage capacity some time in the near future.
