Since its existence, smartphones have swept the world of its feet with its capabilities. We have come a long way on the development of smartphones with new technologies, features and better specs to bring us better user experience as the years go by. A recent report by Strategy Analytics show a record breaking 1.4 billion units of smartphones being shipped globally, a 12 percent spike from 1.28 billion in 2014.

Based on the report, a whopping 404.5 million smartphones were shipped in only the fourth quarter last year. Samsung takes the biggest piece of the cake, accounting nearly a quarter of the number of units with 81.3 million units, allowing them to triumph over Apple’s 74.8 million smartphones sold, whom only had a slight growth from 74.5 million in 2014.

Chinese OEM Huawei held onto third place, taking 8 percent of the marketshare, a 2 percent increase from 2014, breaking the 100 million unit mark in terms of annual sales of smartphones. The Lenovo-Motorola merger takes fourth place with a decline in smartphones shipped compared to the previous year. Xiaomi, who officially hasn’t yet penetrated the western market, stands at fifth place, with 72 million units sold.

Generally, it seems like a two-player contest between Samsung and Apple, with the rest of the OEM’s far behind. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts.
