Razer has acquired numerous companies over the years, but none of them are as big of a name as the one they’ve announced today. In a move that seemed to come out of nowhere, Razer has revealed that they’ve acquired THX.

Originally founded by George Lucas in 1983, THX was one of the first initiatives to establish and certify a baseline level of audio performance across movie theaters. Those who’ve been to the movies would be familiar with the iconic “Deep Note” intro that shows up just before the movie starts. However, THX’s glory days has past them, as other audio companies such as Dolby have since overtaken THX in the cinema audio market.

Razer’s acquisition of THX is one that is beneficial to the audio company, as Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan has mentioned that he intends to push THX into the Chinese movie theaters by exploiting Razer’s own global infrastructure. As for THX-certified Razer audio peripherals, Tan remains tight lipped about it, possibly hinting that these devices, while possible, may not be coming anytime soon.
