Patent trolls, the tech industry’s persona non grata, have set their sights on Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi.

Blue Spike LLC, a “suspected” patent troll in the US, has recently filed a case in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Xiaomi.

The patent which Blue Spike claims that Xiaomi has infringed is US patent 8,930,719 B2, titled as “Data Protection Method and Device”. According to Blue Spike, Xiaomi has infringed this patent due to its Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) software, systems and technology.

The smartphones which are involved in this particular case includes the Xiaomi Mi 4 and all its variants, the Redmi series and the Redmi Note series. Furthermore, Blue Spike has also listed the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the Mi 5 Plus in the suit, phones that have yet to be announced officially.

A quick Google search for Blue Spike has revealed that the company has filed patent infringement suits against 45 different companies within a span of 15 days, making it almost certain that this is indeed the work of a patent troll. Regardless, it remains to be seen if Xiaomi would settle this out of court or would fight said trolls.

The suit is available here for those interested.
