Developers have received an email from Mozilla, announcing that the company will be discontinuing development of its Firefox OS for smartphones. The email was also forwarded to Mozilla’s own community forum, Discourse for the knowledge of readers.

Mozilla made the move after realizing that Firefox OS is not able to compete with mature operating system’s out there with the likes of Android and iOS. The company foresaw the fact that its app ecosystem can’t keep up with the rapid growth out there. The Firefox Marketplace will no longer accept submissions for Android, Desktop and Tablet as of March 29, 2016. However, Mozilla is looking to other pastures with chances of better growth and development.

The company will be focusing on Connected Devices, which is said to be testing out a new product innovation, aimed to make an impact in IoT. Also, Mozilla’s foxfooding program will be focusing on these new product innovation rather than improving the smartphone experience, according to them. The full email is available on Discourse here. Is Mozilla making the right move? Comment below!
