Previously, Windows 10 has been listed by Microsoft as an “optional” update, meaning that the OS will only be downloaded should the user wants it to. Now, Microsoft has upgraded Windows 10 to a “recommended” update.

What this means is that older Windows version such as Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will now automatically download Windows 10 data via Windows’ automatic updaes function. While data for Windows 10 will automatically be downloaded, users will still have to personally approve the installation before Windows 10 will be installed on their device.

If you’re on a metered connection and do not wish to download the 6GB file that Windows 10 comes in, the only way you can do so is to disable Windows Automatic Update. “If you are on a metered connection on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, then you have the option of turning off automatic updates. We strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats,” says Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices group.

Should you wish to return to your old OS after upgrading to Windows 10, you have 31 days to roll back to their older Windows version.
