2016 is shaping up to be a weird year indeed as yet another unthinkable has happened: Microsoft has joined the Linux Foundation.
Microsoft’s relationship with Linux hasn’t exactly been the most cordial of sorts as both companies have been known to throw harsh comments at each other. That being said, this latest development may show that the wounds between them have begun to heal as Microsoft is now Linux Foundation Platinum member. “By becoming a Linux Foundation Platinum member, Microsoft is better able to collaborate with the open source community to deliver transformative mobile and cloud experiences to more people,” says Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation.
Known for making closed-sourced software, Microsoft has become one of the biggest contributors of open-source software in recent years. Microsoft’s decision to join the Linux Foundation isn’t completely out of the blue either, as the company has assisted in projects such as Node.js, OpenDaylight, the Open Container Initiative, R Consortium and the Open API Initiative. Here’s to hoping that Microsoft and Linux have finally learnt to co-exist with each other.
