Android has just released some statistics regarding the distribution of Android versions among its users, collecting data over 7 days ending on February 1.

According to the results, Android’s newest Marshmallow has increased to a user base of 1.2 percent, with the percentage of Lollipop users reaching 34.1 percent, accounting for more than a third of the numbers. Kit Kat users still have the highest percentage at 35.5 percent and the seemingly obsolete Jelly Bean holding strong at 23.9 percent. Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread and Froyo Android users sum up the remaining numbers with a total of 5.2 percent, Froyo still being in the picture at 0.1 percent.

The saturated distribution of Android versions has always been picked on by Apple, who runs the exclusive iOS platform on its device. As of 25 January 2016, the adoption rate of iOS 9 is at 76 percent, iOS 8 at 17 percent and the earlier versions at 7 percent. This is no surprise as Apple has total control over how and what version of iOS its devices run. In contrast, Android is an open platform adopted by a plethora of OEM’s out there.

With news of Google using the Apple approach on their Nexus devices, it is still difficult to say that the Android version adoption rate will ever be consolidated. Are you running Android Marshmallow or are you still on Jelly Bean? Comment below!
