Google Play Games discontinuing Google+ requirement

Google+ receives yet another blow today as Google has decided to remove the need to have a Google+ account in other to use Google Play Games.

In an update to Play Games that was launched today, you no longer need to have a Google+ account to use the service. All you need is a regular Google account and you’re allowed to choose a Gamer ID and avatar to represent you.

Signing into Play Games has also been made easier as you only need to log in once. Previously, you had to log in seperately for every game that you’ve launched. With this system, you’ll now be automatically signed in whenever you install a new app and start a new game.

As for the developer side of things, Google has mentioned that most developers won’t have to make any changes to their games, unless they’ve added additional scopes to the sign in process. Even if they do, these developers only need to remove these extra calls and the app should work as per normal.

Currently, Google is busy rolling out the update to Play Games over the course of the next week, so if you’ve yet to receive the update, you’ll need to wait a little longer.
