Augmented eyes may become a reality sooner than expected as Google has filed a patent for an “intra-ocular device.”

Based on the information available at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office website, it seems that this device is meant to replace the eye’s natural lens and is injected in a solution that congeals and attaches to the lens capsule. Interestingly, the device itself doesn’t only include an electronic lens, it also comes with a storage, sensors, a battery and radio components that can communicate with an “interface device.” Said “interface device” would contain the processor that would do the necessary computing. As for powering this ïntra-ocular device,” the patent states that the internal battery would draw power from an “energy harvesting antenna.”

Simply put, Google’s little “intra-ocular device” is capable of more than just correcting poor vision. It’ll be interesting to see if the possibilities that this eye implant will have in the future.
