Google looks to enter virtual reality market

Google being excited about virtual reality is nothing new. What is new is that Google now wants to make hardware for VR that is far more sophisticated than its Cardboard.

At Google’s Careers page, a number of positions can be seen for the company’s VR division. However, some of the positions being offered are interesting. Positions such as Hardware Engineering Technical Lead Manager, Engineering Project Specialist, Electrical Hardware Engineer and PCB Layout Engineer are among some of the positions that Google is currently hiring.

These positions leave little doubt as to what Google hopes to achieve in the VR market. As the positions were open not too long ago, no one is really sure how Google’s take on the VR headset would function. One speculation is that Google intends to create a mobile-based VR headset in the Nexus line, much like Samsung’s Gear VR.

Currently, Google has been more of a VR enabler rather than a provider, with the Cardboard VR being a gateway to actual VR technology.
