Google is looking to have greater control over Nexus smartphones

Up until now, Google’s Nexus line of smartphones has been a device made out of a partnership between Google and various other smartphone makers such as LG, Samsung and Huawei. However, this might change in the near future as sources claim that Google CEO Sundar Pichai wants to take greater control over its Nexus smartphone program.

In an article by The Information, reports are saying that Google wants to make the Nexus phone more like the iPhone in an attempt to strengthen the Android brand to capture more share at the high end of the Apple dominated market. Should this change take effect, it would reduce the level of involvement of hardware partners that make the phones with Google.

Google’s new stance with the Nexus smartphone may cost other phone brands to refrain from participating in the Nexus smartphone project. That said, it is reported that HTC has been in talks with Google to create this year’s Nexus hardware.

Currently, a huge chunk of Google’s mobile service revenue is made from iOS devices, something that Google is highly uncomfortable with as the Cupertino-based company could potentially make Google’s life hard on the iOS platform. By making a fully homegrown Nexus phone, the theory is that it would not only give Android a bigger share of the high-end phone market, it would also produce a better showcase for Google services.
