Google apologizes for Mic Drop April Fools' joke

Every April Fools, Google would come up with a myriad of jokes to celebrate the occasion. However, one particular joke this year did not go as well as Google intended.

The joke in question is the Gmail Mic Drop. This joke attaches a gif of the yellow Minion from Despicable Me dropping the mic at the end of an e-mail. Understandably, this ‘feature’ was ill-received by those who uses their e-mail for professional purposes, mainly because the option to include the gif was located so near the “Send” and “Send & Archive” button. A bug in the joke further caused users who had accidentally clicked the joke button within a new compose message with no recipients would cause the GIF to be attached even though the standard send button was clicked.

Google has since issued an apology for this poorly thought out joke, acknowledging that they should have included a confirmation button before activating the feature. They’ve also apologized for the bug in question. “Again, sorry. We love April Fools jokes at Google, and we regret that this joke missed the mark and disappointed you,” says the company.
