Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript and one of the founders of Mozilla, is hard at work creating a new browser. This new browser, called Brave, aims to remove advertising from the internet through a rather unorthodox means.

According to Eich, advertising is intrusive and slows down the internet to boot, causing users to turn to ad blocking software to eliminate them altogether. Eich’s solution to this problem? Create a new web browser that blocks all adverts by default, and the replace those adverts with new ones.

Before we get into the replacing ads part, let’s focus on the adblocking part. Eich has stated that Brave’s in-built ad-blocking software would benefits the user by way of increased privacy and speed. Due to the way ads function on the internet these days, Brave’s ad-blocking software would “preserve data sovereignty and anonymity” and would allow users to surface the web two to four times faster.

Now for the replacing ads part. Eich says that he aims to buid a better ad model for publishers as well as users through Brave. The browser will detect where adverts should go and fill them with new programmatic advertising. The theory is that by doing so, Brave can offer a better deal to publishers by cutting out the middle man. Publishers who use this system stands to gain 55% of revenues, 15% of it will go to Brave, 15% will go to the partner that supplies the ads, while the remaining 10-15% surprisingly, goes to the user. Brave will also allow users to make micro-payments to publishers they like, which would cause the browser to automatically block all adverts on the websites they choose to pay for.

Brave is currently scheduled for a public launch later this year and will be available on Windows, OS X, Android and iOS.
