Cortana is finally official for Android and iOS

Looks like after months of testing, Microsoft has finally officially launched Cortana for Android and iOS. You can get the app from both Google Play and App Store, depending on which ecosystem you’re using. Cortana will also be deeply integrated into the Cyanogen OS-powered OnePlus One this month December together with the 12.1.1 Cyanogen update.

So how much of Cortana’s full features will be available on these two competing ecosystems? At the basic level, you can track reminders and and notifications such as flight details, appointments and the like. However, beyond the basic stuff, it depends on which system you are on.

For Android users, whenever you’re in the app or the home screen, a “Hey Cortana” can get some of your queries answered. In fact, you can even get your text notifications on your Windows 10 powered PC. However, iOS users will not be getting this feature since most likely Apple would not allow it; afterall, Cortana is somewhat a rival of Siri.

As for Cyanogen systems, a “Hey Cortana” shoutout can be accessed almost anywhere, even if you’re busy on another app. Cortana will also be pre-installed in this system, so it does make sense that its use would be more extensive. You can use this virtual assistant to power down your phone and even change networks, however, although the features here are extensive, you still aren’t able to do as much compared to the full capabilities of the Windows Phone.

Now, here comes the bad news for Malaysian users: Cortana, although officially launched, can only be used in USA and in China, although there seems to be more promise for Cortana to be available for Malaysians on the desktop. Maybe it is time to ask Microsoft about this.
