In an announcement that came out of left field, it seems that Firaxis Games’ oh-so-popular turn-based 4X game, Civilizations, is about to get a new installment this year.

Aptly titled Civilizations VI, the game will be sporting a ton of new tweaks and improvements to the tried-and-true gameplay mechanics. For instance, Civilization VI will feature districts which will give bonuses to specific improvements built on the tiles, which forces you to decide if you would want to take advantage of said bonuses, or forgo it to fulfill other requirements. Another change made to the game is researching technologies. Previously, your rate of research in the game is tied to how much science your entire civilization outputs. In Civilization VI, most if not every technology in the game can be sped up when you fulfill specific requirements.

Politics in the game has also been worked upon to make it feel dynamic. Diplomacy against the AI has always been a weak link in the Civilizations series, but this time, Firaxis is aiming to improve it. Now, all AI leaders will have a historical agenda that’s appropriate to their historical personality, and with personality comes a play style that is unique but appropriate for their role.

Other improvements that have been made to Civilization VI includes the ability to embed support units into military units. In Civilization V, only one unit can occupy a tile at any given time. With Civilization VI, while you can only have one military unit on a tile at any time, you can also embed a support unit, such as a settler, into said military unit, allowing you to escort it without needing to free up a tile. Multiplayer has also been tweaked to allow for a shorter game. A quicker multiplayer game speed isn’t the only thing that’s been implemented into Civilization VI as you can now set specific scenarios and unique victory sets designed for shorter games. Said scenarios aren’t limited to multiplayer as they can be implemented in single player as well.

Simply put, Civilization VI looks to be a proper sequel to Civilization V rather than a reskin ala Beyond Earth. The game currently has a release date of October 21st.
