Apple updates iTunes to resolve buggy Apple Music update

Apple Music was launched end of June with much anticipation and fanfare.

Unfortunately, there was a bug in iTunes 12.2 that prevented existing songs from syncing correctly to Apple Music, causing much confusion and angst amongst music listeners.

Some of the badly affected users had years of effort put into curating their music libraries carefully.

Now, with an update to iTunes to version 12.2.1, Apple claims that users will no longer have an issue with it’s song matching service.

Apple Music was heavily anticipated by many music listeners worldwide.

Owing to Apple’s extensive deals with record labels and artists, music listeners can now stream to artists like Taylor Swift and AC/DC, which have previously shunned other music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora.

On June 30th, Apple updated iOS to version 8.4, and iTunes to version 12.2 to push out it’s Apple Music service, and Beats One radio station.

Apple offered a 3-month trial, a really generous offer to convince music listeners to start using Apple Music. In the long run, users would pay Apple $9.99 monthly to access a library of over 30 million songs.

Malaysians have it better by only having to pay Apple $3.99 per month, which amounts to roughly RM15. The pricing was not arbitrary generosity on Apple’s part, given that that Spotify was charging RM15 monthly for it’s service.

The catch on Apple’s end: You’ll have to use iCloud Music Library to sync your newly expanded catalogue and playlists across devices.

Here’s where it comes crashing down for many listeners. In iTunes 12.2, users with existing song libraries with custom metadata would experience glitches with syncing their songs and data to iCloud Music Library.

Thus went years of work out of the window.

For those who updated to iTunes 12.2 and were affected by the bug, there seems to be a workaround here. Beware though, we have not been able to test this.

For those who have been holding off updating to iTunes, or were wary of Apple Music, here’s your chance.

2 weeks after the launch, Apple posted an incremental iTunes update to version 12.2.1 to fix issues with iCloud Music Library and Apple Music.

For iTunes Match subscribers that were affected, there’s now a way to choose whether to Merge or Replace songs in their library.
