Faceless hacktivist group Anonymous has directed their attention to Nissan as the group has launched a DDOS attack on the car manufacturer’s websites as part of an anti-whaling campaign against Japan.
The attack is part of #OpSeaWorld, an anti-whaling campaign that started in December of last year. This campaign is a protest against Japan’s plans to continue hunting 333 minke whales per year for the next 12 years as part of its new whaling plan.
The attacks first occured late yesterday and has cause both Nissan’s Japan website and global website to be inaccessible. A member of the Anonymous group has since come forward to claim reponsibility for the attack, stating that they only intend to bring the website down and not steal data.
Nissan spokesman Dion Corbett has confirmed the attack on their websites to Bloomberg and has stressed that the company has no stance nor any connection to whale hunting. Corbett has also stated that Nissan will be temporarily suspending its websites to prevent further risks. As of the time of writing, both websites are still inaccessible.
